About repairing a roof yourself. Loosen and remove the damaged shingles. If the shingles are severely damaged don t try to salvage them. Use a caulking gun to apply a dab of roofing sealant about 4 per 10 oz.

Just remove them and replace them with new shingles of a similar style to the rest of the shingles on the roof. Loosen the adhesive underneath the tabs of the damaged shingle then pull them free and discard. Use a flat bar to pry up the damaged shingle and remove the nails being careful not to damage the shingle above it. Repairing or replacing the most common type of roofing asphalt or asphalt fiberglass shingles sometimes called composition roofing is relatively easy but be sure you can work safely and comfortably on it before you decide to make your own repairs.

Repair a torn or curled asphalt shingle. As asphalt shingles get older their corners often begin to curl downward or upward. Over time asphalt shingles begin to curl upwards or downwards curling cupping clawing as a result of improper installation age or environmental conditions. If you notice a shingle starting to curl you can forestall the inevitable curling by gluing down the curled section.

Insert a putty knife under and above the damaged shingle to break the seal holding it down.
