Under many circumstances it is possible to install a new metal roof over the top of existing asphalt shingles even if there are two layers of asphalt shingles. This provides added protection against ice dams. The use of roof hugger systems allows you add blanket rigid and or reflective insulation between the existing and new roofs. Our roof systems can be installed over existing metal shingle rubber and asphalt roof systems.

All shingle manufacturers honor the warranty whether their products are used for a reroof or a new roof. Installing a new roof over an existing one also called a layover or nailover is often possible although not always the best option. We have safely installed over 1000 roofs. We can site form several different profiles of standing seam roofs on site in continuous lengths and are a certified installer for the top roofing manufacturer systems.

Nailing new shingles over existing ones is less expensive and faster requiring less labor but it also means you lose the chance to assess the sheathing for signs of water damage. However installing new flashings including special drip edge flashings made for reroofing will ensure a tight seal and a long life. There s little to no material removed which can keep costs down. This provides a safer environment for both workers inside the building and the roofers as they install the new roof.

However you ll want to check with your local building department before you make any decisions. If your roof is in good shape but has some damage to one side from a downed tree or has lost shingles in a wind storm an overlay is worth considering. Some roofers install a layer of waterproof shingle underlayment wsu over the existing shingles at the eave end as would be done for a roof laid on bare sheathing. Building officials in some areas will only allow a re roof over one layer of shingles while officials in other places may allow you to place the roof over two layers of shingles. Less labor is needed and there are much smaller refuse fees. If the job is done correctly with the new layer of shingles laid flat over the existing shingles the old roof cushions the new one and serves as a secondary barrier should wind or water ever break through the new shingles. By using roof huggers the existing roof can be left in place.
